<p>As I approached my forties, I became more aware that the `change` was looming, but I wasn`t too sure how it would affect me.</p>
<p>Now I`m in my fifties and you can be sure that I know exactly what menopause is and how it affects women&#8230;.and not in a good way!&nbsp; As life spans increase, a woman can expect to spend a third of her life in the post menopausal stage and usually, a woman`s symptoms will start at a similar age to that of her mother.</p>
<p>I`ll bet there are thousands of women like me, who know that menopause is looming, but have no idea why it happens and are not prepared for the changes it will have on their bodies and their lives. &nbsp;I mean how on earth can you prepare for almost instant weight gain, periods occurring unexpectedly and then not making an appearance for months and a brain that turns to mush for no apparent reason?</p>
<p>A recent survey reported that a massive 45% of menopausal women found their symptoms difficult to deal with, which is a shame as there is a tremendous amount of information and support available to women nowadays. Unlike our mother`s day, when women were expected to just accept their symptoms as part of the ageing process!</p>
<p>By the way, the word menopause &ndash; in case you were wondering &ndash; is derived from the Greek words meno (month) and pause (to end). And is the opposite of the word menarche, which means the cessation of monthly periods.</p>
<p>So, what is menopause?</p>
<p>When we ladies begin to run out of eggs and the ovaries stop secreting the hormones estrogen and progesterone we are in the peri-menopausal stage and will usually encounter irregular periods, spotting and hot flashes. &nbsp;Incidentally, the hot flash is THE most common symptom of menopause and affects around 70% of women. On a positive note, 80% of women report that their hot flashes lasted for two years or less.</p>
<p>This stage can continue for several years and then we will enter the menopausal stage &ndash; usually at the age of 51 or thereabouts. &nbsp;At this point, I would like to point out that fertility is not completely at an end and although it is less likely that a woman will conceive, it is still possible and she should continue with birth control as a precautionary measure. Unless she would welcome the pitter patter of tiny feet of course! Once a woman has had no monthly cycle for twelve consecutive months, she has gone through menopause.</p>
<p>&nbsp;As this process progresses, a woman`s entire body is usually affected and can have a major physiological and psychological impact on her life. &nbsp;She will notice changes in her skin, body, brain and may suffer from bouts of depression as the impact of these changes sink in. Major support from those closest to her will help enormously, although it may sometimes seem as though she has morphed into a different person who is not only bad tempered and moody, but temperamental and irrational (or is that just me?)</p>
